Break ups can be hard – take it from me, I’ve just left a 2-year relationship. It’s difficult dealing with a mutual breakup, especially if nothing went drastically wrong in the end. Having everyone in your life suddenly asking you if you’re alright and making super cheesy jokes to try to cheer you up can be frustrating when all you want is to be left alone. However, every now and then you’ll get some genuinely good advice.

1. It’s okay to be sad. It’s okay not to be sad.

Everyone reacts in a different way to relationships ending, whether they are romantic or platonic. Some people sob their heart out to Olivia Rodrigo albums and eat a whole pint of ice cream, but others might continue life as normal. Whatever you’re feeling is valid, and as long as you’re not putting yourself at risk, do whatever you need to.

2. Take it one day at a time.

You might want to wake up one morning and be completely fine, but you can’t expect it. It might be the last thing you want to do, but getting up each morning and pushing yourself through the day is the best way to navigate through the aftermath of a breakup.

3. Talk to people you trust.

I know that sometimes it can be hard to open up, but sharing what you’re thinking about can take the weight off your shoulders and sometimes just talking can make you feel better.

4. There’s nothing wrong with you.

If you were broken up with, you’re probably going to be doubting every action/word/decision you’ve ever made to try and figure out where it went wrong. Don’t. In the end, you had no control over it. You’re worthy of love.

5. It may take time…

Maybe days, weeks, months, years. It hurts now but at some point, the pain will subside, and you’ll be able to look back and smile.

6. You did your best, that is all that’s expected.

No-one is perfect, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t going to get hurt sometimes. Just be yourself, do what you can do, and live by your own standards.

No relationship is perfect, so no break up is going to be perfect. How you deal with it is valid, even if it’s nothing like what we see in movies or on the TV. As long as remember that you can get through this.
